Stephen Marshall is part of a new breed of Gen X media activists that have taken the independent news community by storm over the past several years. Marshall co-founded Guerrilla News Network [GNN.tv] in 2000, and h as since made a name for himself through his short film and documentarian work as editor, writer, and director. A short docufilm entitled Crack the CIA won Marshall and GNN the Audience Award at the 2002 Sundance Online Film Festival. The award is the only one given out by the Online Festival and its winner is determined through votes by online viewers from around the globe.
Marshall also wrote and directed This Revolution, which stars Kids & Sin City starlet Rosario Dawson and outspoken, in-your-face rapper Immortal Technique. The film earned Official Selection status at the 2005 Sundance, Taos, Milan, Munich, Santa Cruz film festivals, and also earned Marshall and Dawson a night in jail while filming outside the 2004 Republican National Convention. The charges were later dropped, being that they had all proper permits to film there all along. Also in 2004, Marshall co-authored GNN's first book, True Lies, with fellow GNN soldier Anthony Lappé. The book "gives careful scrutiny to alternative versions of election fraud, conspiracy theories surrounding 9/11, the notion of American empire, Gulf War illness and military vaccinations, 'crossover' voting (voting in two primary elections), electronic voting machines," and the use of depleted uranium munitions by the US in the Middle East.
