Lone Gunmen
The trio of Gunmen are portrayed as geekish "conspiracy theorists" who publish an alternative news rag aptly titled "The Lone Gunman", which exposes government plots and hidden agendas.

The X-Files series itself had dealt with a number of real-life issues based on whistleblowers, witnesses, government documents, actual events, and theory. The scary thing about it is that when you watch the X-Files now, with all the knowledge of what's happening in these times, you can see that the show actually was pretty right-on and frighteningly accurate in some cases.
If you're an avid fan of the show, as well as an educated researcher in the conspirology field, you'll notice that the main character, Fox Mulder, was actually based on the life and experiences of William Cooper--a man who worked with Naval Intelligence for many years, saw evidence of UFOs and government involvement with E.B.E.s [extraterrestrial biological entities] and a massive conspiracy to keep it all silent.
As with Mulder in the X-Files, later in Cooper's life, an attempt to throw him off the trail was made as he was told that everything he'd seen, everyone that's ever given him information, all the evidence he had was disinformation meant to make him believe the lie in order to spread it and get the masses to believe it. He was told that there was no alien threat and that the US government was going to fake an alien invasion [PROBLEM], which would cause the globe to look to the US military to spring into action and save the day [REACTION] and bring about a one-world government with the US at the helm to guard against any furthur alien threats [SOLUTION].
